Greenbelt Issues
Ontario’s Greenbelt covers 1.8 million acres (780,000 hectares) and wraps around the Golden Horseshoe from Niagara to Ganaraska and then north to the tip of the Bruce Peninsula. The Greenbelt permanently protects natural areas, vibrant communities, important heritage areas and watersheds. It includes the Niagara Escarpment, the Oak Ridges Moraine and Canada’s largest urban protected area, the Rouge Park.
Ontario’s Greenbelt represents an award-winning approach to curbing urban sprawl and encouraging healthier urban planning. But even though the value of the Greenbelt has been widely acknowledged, threats remain.
