Greenbelt 2.0
Growing the Greenbelt towards a greener, more livable Golden Horseshoe
The Ontario Greenbelt Alliance has unveiled its vision for expanding the Ontario Greenbelt.
Greenbelt 2.0 is a detailed map depicting where the Greenbelt needs to grow in order to fulfill the requirements under the original Greenbelt Plan. With the proposed expansion, the Greenbelt would increase by about 60% or 1.2 million acres (480, 000 ha).
Expansion is based on areas that were left out of the original Plan and are currently experiencing problematic 'leap-frog' development, or contain significant agricultural lands, water resources and natural heritage systems.
Specific target areas include Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph and Brant regions (in particular the Paris-Galt and Waterloo Moraines, and prime farmland east of Brantford, that abuts the Greenbelt); Simcoe County, and; the areas surrounding Port Hope and Cobourg.
