Ontario’s 2 million acre Greenbelt encompasses three provincial plans, the Niagara Escarpment Plan Area, the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Area and the Greenbelt Plan Area. The 10 year review of the Greenbelt, Oak Ridges Moraine and Niagara Escarpment Plans is completed. The plans were created using a science-based systems approach. The Niagara Escarpment Plan protects the unique landforms and natural systems of the escarpment, the Oak Ridges Moraine Plan protects the vulnerable water systems, and natural systems of the moraine and the Greenbelt Plan protects agricultural systems and natural areas, such as forests, wetlands, river systems and meadows.
Together, these plans protect these landscapes from development. The plans tell us where development can occur and where it should not occur in order to protect important natural features from urban sprawl.
