New report released today on expanding Ontario’s Greenbelt through urban river valleys
Toronto, ON – In honour of the Greenbelt’s eighth birthday today, the Ontario Greenbelt Alliance released a report entitled, Good Things Are Growing in Ontario: Expanding Ontario’s Greenbelt Through Urban River Valleys.
The report shows that over five million more Ontarians would be directly connected to the Greenbelt if the Greenbelt grew along some of the province’s best known rivers and creeks. This is now a possibility, thanks to the province’s new urban river valley designation.
Toronto, ON -- The Ontario Greenbelt Alliance (OGA) strongly supports the Region of Waterloo’s appeal of the recent Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) ruling that considerably weakens the Region’s smart growth official plan and threatens the Places to Grow Act.
The OMB ruling forces the Region to open up 1,053 hectares of prime farmland for low-density sprawl development. This is more than 10 times the land the Region says it needs for this purpose. Yesterday, the Region passed a unanimous motion to appeal its case to Divisional Court and asked the OMB to rehear the case.
Vaughan, ON – The Ontario Greenbelt Alliance applauds today’s announcement by the Ontario government to formally add Oakville’s Glenorchy Conservation Area to Ontario’s Greenbelt. The province also unveiled its new urban river valley designation as part of the Greenbelt Plan, which will allow municipalities to include rivers and streams in urban areas under the Greenbelt’s protection.
Toronto, ON – The Ontario Greenbelt Alliance applauded the announcement today by the Ontario government that the Glenorchy Conservation Area will be added to Ontario’s Greenbelt. The 400-hectare area in northern Oakville is the first addition to Ontario’s Greenbelt since the Greenbelt was created in 2005.
